How to sell a car in NZ: the complete checklist.

Selling a car in New Zealand is straightforward once you know the steps — but skipping one can cost you money or leave you legally responsible for a car you no longer own. Here's the whole process, in order.

1. Get your paperwork straight

Have the current rego on hand, a current WOF if you're selling privately (legally required unless sold “as is, where is”), and your service records — a stamped service book reliably adds money to any offer.

2. Know what's owing

If there's finance on the car, it's registered against the vehicle on the PPSR (Personal Property Securities Register), and any buyer can check. It doesn't stop a sale — the finance just gets settled from the sale price — but be upfront about it.

3. Price it realistically

Look at what the same make, model, year and kilometres are actually listed for — then remember listed prices aren't sold prices. Private sale usually nets the most on paper but costs you weeks of messages, no-shows and negotiation; trade-in pays least; a direct buyer sits in between with none of the hassle.

4. Transfer ownership properly — same day

When the car sells, bothof you need to act: the buyer notifies NZTA they've acquired the vehicle, and you notify NZTA you've sold it — online in minutes or at an NZTA agent. Do your half immediately: until you do, speeding tickets, tolls and parking fines from the new owner can land on you.

5. Get paid safely

Bank transfer, cleared before the car leaves. Never hand over keys against a “payment screenshot”.
